Emotional Baggage

April 17, 2007

Unpacking your suitcase of emotions.

Have you ever noticed how some people have a favorite piece of emotional baggage? It may be hang-ups on some past hurts, unresolved personal issues, malice against a perceived injustice, unattained goal or anything which hinders personal growth and development.

When you look closer, it becomes obvious that they do not want to get rid of this baggage. They carry it around on the theory that they would prefer to deal with the devil they know rather than the ones they don’t know. And further, a great segment of their social life revolves around their emotional baggage. They wonder if their friends are calling up for the latest update because it adds a little excitement to their day, or if they are really concerned about the issues. A big problem with emotional baggage is that it eventually takes over your psychic space and your unique personality. When this happens it can pop out at times that you prefer it didn’t. Sometimes this causes problems, and you can no longer count on yourself to live up to your commitments because you have become so involved with your emotional baggage.

On the other hand, you will notice that some people do not carry around a lot of emotional baggage. The fact is that if your personality and attitude space are full of things that help you to love yourself and appreciate others, there is no room for emotional baggage. The less emotional baggage, the more you tend to love your life and those around you. Wouldn’t it be interesting if we decided to throw out all the negatives and make room for the positives in our life? We would lead a happier, satisfying and a more spiritually-productive life if we intentionally decide to dwell on the positive purpose of our lives instead of our problems.
